57 medals for Winning Students at BUCS swimming champs

Winning Students swimming scholars made a lasting impression at the BUCS Short Course Championships this past week as they won 57 medals at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.

Duncan Scott (University of Stirling) led the way in the men’s events as he claimed eight individual titles and two relay medals, including nine golds, three Scottish records and five new BUCS records. Scott’s Stirling teammate, Craig Benson, also enjoyed several successes as he won gold in the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke and 4 x 50m medley relay.

Lucy Hope and Kathryn Greenslade (both University of Edinburgh) were the shining lights in the women’s category as they claimed six and five medals respectively, with Hope claiming gold in the 100m backstroke and 4 x 50m freestyle relay whilst Greenslade won titles in the 400m freestyle, 200m backstroke and 4 x 50m freestyle relay.

There were also gold medals for University of Edinburgh athletes Jack Thorpe (100m freestyle), Tain Bruce, Sophie Smith (200m freestyle frelay) and their University of Stirling counterparts Keanna MacInnes (200m butterfly), Ollie Carter (S10 200m individual medley), Martyn Walton (50m backstroke, 4 x 50m freestyle and medley relays) and Scott McLay (4 x 50m freestyle and medley relays).

Craig McNally (University of the West of Scotland), David Cumberlidge (Heriot-Watt University), Katie Robertson, Kara Hanlon (both University of Edinburgh), Cassie Wild and Craig McLean (both University of Stirling) also secured individual and relay podium finishes during the meet with Winning Students athletes being involved in the Stirling’s men’s and Edinburgh women’s teams that overall first and second in their respective categories.

The athletes now set their sights on the European and Scottish short course championships, in Glasgow and Edinburgh, next month.
