Individual scholarships

Talented student athletes and school leavers set for study can apply annually for a Winning Students Individual Scholarship, for those competing in either individual sports or in small combination sports such as bobsleigh.

Athletes competing in team sports or in any of the following sports cannot apply for an Individual Scholarship: Badminton, Canoeing, Curling, Football, Golf, Hockey, Judo, Orienteering, Rowing, Swimming, Tennis and Triathlon.

To be considered for an Individual Scholarship, athletes should have attained, or demonstrated sufficient capacity to attain, the following level in their sport:

  •     Top 25 at the Olympic Games, Paralympic Games or World Championships
  •     Top 15 at the European Championships or Commonwealth Games
  •     Top 5 at the World University Games or World University Championships

Winning Students is currently bidding for a new funding cycle to commence autumn 2019. Individual scholarship applications for the 2019-20 academic year will open following the conclusion of this process (anticipated by end of spring 2019).

Application Timeline

    On Your Marks!

    Individual Scholarship applications are open in February and close in April each year. Please note applications for the 2019-20 academic year are delayed due to a new funding bid process. It is anticipated that applications will be open by end of spring 2019.

    All nominated athletes complete and return their paperwork by end of September.

    Core sport and Individual Scholarship athletes are announced each October.
