Student athletes secured massive victories and landmark achievements in four sports in Nottingham, claiming a host of hard-fought national titles.

Fencer Zoe Wagstaff captained the University of Edinburgh Women’s 1s fencing team to victory over Nottingham 1s, earning the team the title of BUCS National Champions and showcasing their sheer brilliance.

Edinburgh was also victorious in lacrosse, with Katie Binsted and her teammates winning the BUCS Women’s Trophy after a 10-7 battle against Exeter 2s.

Badminton player Rachel Sugden played a key role in helping the University of Strathclyde secure silver in the BUCS Women's National Trophy. It comes hot off the heels of a Doubles Scottish University win with partner Sophie Aford.

Meanwhile University of Stirling student Shayne Humphries contributed to the University of Nottingham's successful retention of the BUCS Mixed Wheelchair Basketball Championship with a 66-58 win over Loughborough. BUCS allows players to compete for other universities due to the infancy of the sport in the programme.

Cathy Gallagher, Chair, Winning Students 100 Advisory Board said: “It was a Big BUCS Wednesday for the record books, highlighting the hard work of many Winning Students 100 scholars.

“We congratulate Rachel, Zoe, Katie, and Shayne on their individual success and contributions to special team victories at this great showcase of student sporting excellence.”
