An insight into Scotland's scholarship programme. Winning Students scholars Ross Murdoch and Amy Regan talk about their sporting careers, their studies, and the support they receive from Winning Students.

What is Winning Students?


Badminton scholars Alex Dunn (University of Strathclyde) and Adam Hall (Open University in Scotland) have worked their way up the world rankings after forming their doubles partnership and, following a number of international titles, have competed at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and BWF World Championships.

University of Edinburgh graduate, Eilidh Gibson, was part of the Winning Students programme throughout her time at university and, through balancing her sport and studies, went on to win a world canoeing championship title and is now training and competing as a full-time athlete.

Former curling scholars, Cameron Smith (Scotland's Rural College) and Kyle Waddell (University of the West of Scotland/University of Stirling), were on the Winning Students programme throughout the majority of their time in higher education and represented GB at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics  in their final year.

The Scottish FA National Performance Centre for women's football opened its doors in 2009 at the University of Stirling and is now based at Heriot-Watt University.

Scotland’s first national centre of excellence for women’s football has been established through a partnership between the universities, Winning Students and the Scottish FA.

Winning Students scholars, Abi Harrison (University of the Highlands and Islands) and Jenna Fife (Edinburgh Napier University) have both won their first international caps whilst part of the programme and have spoken about the impact it has had on their studies and sport.

After an impressive 2018, which saw her win the British Universities and Colleges Order of Merit in her first year, Hazel MacGarvie is aiming to progress her golf career whilst studying at the University of Stirling.

Individual Scholarships

GB target shooter, Seonaid McIntosh, studies Electrical Engineering at Heriot-Watt University and has benefited from the academic flexibility and funding support offered by the Winning Students programme.

Heriot-Watt University and Judo Scotland scholar, Alex Short, claimed his first international senior medal after winning the men's -66kg title at the European Open event in Glasgow.

We caught with Short to find out what it takes to compete at an international level whilst studying for a degree.


Rowing scholar, Maddie Arlett (University of Edinburgh) recently completed her MSc in Strength and Conditioning and has gone full-time in her sport having competed for Team GB at the Rowing World Championships.

As Olympic medallist, World and European champion and Scotland's most decorated ever athlete at a single Commonwealth Games, Duncan Scott (University of Stirling) has already achieved a significant amount in his short career.

Fergus and Douglas Roberts are part of the high performance triathlon programme at the University of Stirling and being part of Winning Students helps them combine studying, for their respective degrees in Environmental Geography and Environmental Management, with training and competing across the world.
